C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 Quiz

Question

What significance might the flowers have for these people?

How might they be feeling?

C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 - A sheepish man giving a small bunch of flowers to a sceptical looking woman
C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 - A very young girl crouching down picking flowers
C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 - A man in a blue t-shirt showing what flowers he wants to sell

Sample Answer

1 minute to compare and contrast the two pictures you have chosen as well as answer the two questions.

I’d like to choose the first picture and the second picture. I think in the first picture, it’s significant that the man seems to be giving the woman flowers because it looks as if he’s trying to make up for an argument. And so maybe he’s feeling a little embarrassed and his wife’s feeling a little, not embarrassed, but maybe a little angry. The girl in the second picture, however, looks as if she’s totally engrossed in these magical flowers. And so these flowers are maybe beautiful in her eyes. And so she’s maybe feeling as if she’s feeling very kind. So, she’s picking some for her mother. And so this girl is on her own outside but it looks as if the man and the women are inside somewhere, maybe in their house. The man and the woman are obviously older while the girl is a young child.

Analysis

This is my opinion of the above answer. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.

This way of answering is the most common. talk about one picture, then talk about the other. If you have time, then talk about them both. There are pitfalls doing it this way, the biggest one being that it is really easy to run out of time.

‘and so’ is used too often

Good use of phrases such as ‘seems to be’, ‘looks as if’, ‘maybe’ to show that we can’t know just by looking at the pictures.

Lesser-Known Vocabulary
