Sample Answers
Books and Reading Habits
1/ Do you often read books? When?
Yes, I do. I’m an avid reader, basically. I will pick up a book whenever I can. You know, if I’m, I used to always read before I went to bed, not before I went to bed, in bed, so I could go to sleep, so I could forget about all the things the were worrying me. But these days, because I need to wear glasses, it’s not so easy and so I don’t do that so much.
2/ Are your reading habits now different than before?
My reading habits are a little different, as I said, because now I wear glasses so it’s harder to read in bed. But one of the things I do enjoy, to be honest, is if I’m eating by myself, for example, if I’m having my lunch or if I’m eating my dinner by myself, then I’ll just sit and read a book while I’m eating. And I find that extremely relaxing. It just makes it such a peaceful time for me.
3/ Have you ever read a novel that has been adapted into a film?
Yes, I have, needless to say I can’t remember any names right now, but I have, and to be honest, I don’t really like watching the films. If I’ve read the book first, I don’t really like watching the films and if I’ve seen the film first, I’m not so keen on even trying to read the book because I’m kind of used to the images that are in the film.
4/ Which do you prefer, reading books or watching movies?
I much prefer reading books to watching movies because I like to make up the characters, what they look like, the places I have quite a vivid imagination and so it’s quite easy for me to put different people in different places and so on. Whereas in movies you’re kind of given that and all you need to do is go is sit and watch it, which I find quite dull a lot of the time.
Speaking Analysis
This is my opinion of the above answers. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.
Question 1 – Good answer. The question is answered directly, then more detail given with comparison to the past at the end.
Question 2 – Answered the question directly, then listed times when I read by myself. Great stress and intonation on ‘extremely’.
Question 3 – Good answer. Answered directly with quite simple vocabulary, but good use of ‘needless to say’ and ‘to be honest’.
Question 4 – Good with reasons supporting the answer, and a comparison at the end.
