IELTS Speaking Part 3 Quiz

Sample Answers

A Movie You Would Like to Watch Again

1/ Where do people normally watch movies?

These days, I think people watch movies almost anywhere. On the bus, in the classroom, at home, on the sofa, in their bed. They watch them on their phones, on their computers, on their tablet. But only on special occasions, do they go to the cinema. And maybe they realise how good a movie is and they want to see it on the big screen with surround sound and so on. And so, they go to the cinema. That’s what I would say.

2/ What are the differences between watching movies at home and in a cinema?

I think there are several differences. First of all, personally, I find that the biggest difference is you have that joint experience at the cinema where if you get frightened by something, the rest of the audience are probably just as afraid, if not more afraid, than you are. Whereas at home you have to go through that thing all by yourself, unless you’re watching something on TV or the laptop with your partner or with your family. Secondly, I would say it’s more expensive going to a cinema and it’s more of an occasion, more of an event. And so, you wouldn’t invite, if you’re wanting to ask a girl or a boy out for a date, you don’t say, do you want to come around to my house and watch a movie on the computer or my phone? You take them to the cinema. And so there’s before the cinema, there’s during the cinema. And that can really be quite expensive. So, watching a movie at home can be much, much cheaper.

3/ Are actors or actresses important to movies? Why?

I think the actors and actresses are important to the movies sometimes, I think, basically in this day and age, I think they’re not as subtle. They don’t need to be as subtle and bring as many attributes to a movie as they used to, especially with the use of green screens. And so, if it’s an action movie, for example, they’re basically doing all these things in a studio with the background added later. They have a computer-generated background or whatever. Whereas in the past, for example, movies from before I was born, for example, some of the stunts are jaw dropping. Even the silent movies. Unbelievable. Some of the stunts they had,

4/ Why are there fewer people going to the cinema to watch movies?

I think probably because these days, especially probably because of the cost, the expense, and also because of the pandemic, because many cinemas have been closed. And so, as a result of that, there have been more the development of more home theatres, shall we say, with your own sound systems and so on, which, to be quite honest, I’m not really into at all. I think it’s basically just a waste of money.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Analysis

This is my opinion of the above answers. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.

Question 1 – Good answer, although maybe slightly short. Answers the question directly, giving several examples and then says when people usually go to the cinema.

Question 2 – Good answer. Several differences (here, two main differences, would have been ideal), then ‘first of all’ and ‘secondly’. Explaining logically throughout.

Question 3 – Good answer. Compares the current actors with those of the past.

Question 4 – Good answer showing why there seem to be less people going to the cinema these days, and one of the alternatives available.
