C1 Advanced Task 1 Essay Sample Answer
You have listened to a radio discussion programme about how to motivate children to do regular exercise. You have made the notes below:
Ways of motivating children to do regular exercise:
• parental example
• government funding
• school
Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
“If children don’t see their parents do exercise, they don’t think it’s important.”
“If sports facilities were cheaper, more people would use them.”
“Sport in schools is too competitive. It should be fun for everyone.”
Write an essay for your tutor discussing two of the ways in your notes. You should explain which way is more effective in motivating children to do regular exercise and provide reasons to support your opinion. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.
There is an ongoing discussion concerning how children can be motivated to exercise regularly. If parents lead by example and governments invest in sports facilities, it should encourage these youngsters to make a habit of keeping fit.
Parents have a tremendous influence on their children. Keeping active through any kind of exercise and not being allowed to lead a sedentary lifestyle is normal for many children, even though they are not forced to exercise specifically by their parents. Gardening, walking to the shops or even dancing at home, for example, can take the place of doing sports or other activities. In this way, exercise is built into the children’s routine, so it seems natural to them.
Investment in sports facilities would also motivate many groups of children. Firstly, some may be discouraged by less than inviting amenities and outdated equipment, despite being desperate to take part in the activities. Badly lit and poorly decorated changing areas as well as outdated showers can be a decisive factor for many. In addition, for most buildings, renovations would be enough to raise the standard and encourage a whole new group of children to take part in many sports.
In conclusion, no matter how much money is spent by the government or private enterprise on renovating sporting amenities, learning healthy keep fit habits from their parents will motivate children to exercise regularly more.
