C1 Advanced Task 1 Essay Sample Answer

Your class has attended a lecture on ways for the government to boost students’ interest in science. You have made the notes below.

Methods for encouraging an interest in science:
• TV programmes
• improved teaching facilities
• career opportunities

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
‘Not many young people watch science programmes on TV.’
‘It is expensive to provide laboratories with new equipment.’
‘The government cannot guarantee career opportunities.’

Write an essay for your tutor discussing two of the methods in your notes. You should explain which method you think is more important and provide reasons to support your opinion. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the meeting, but you should use your own words as far as possible. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.

Some people think that the government should find way to make science more appealing to students. Although there are numerous approaches to this issue, two main ones are evident, namely the improvement of teaching facilities and better employment prospects.

Upgrading the facilities for teaching science in schools has both benefits and drawbacks. The main benefits would include the students being able to do more complex science experiments and learn faster in well-equipped school laboratories, although the teachers would need their skills upgraded also. The main resulting drawback would be the expense incurred, which would need to be borne by the education department budget unless larger employers who would benefit from such a scheme could be persuaded to donate a sizable percentage of the cost.

These large employers would probably have experience of sponsoring students through tertiary education in a bid to have the best staff. Even if students waited until after their graduation to look for a job, a good career would not be hard to find. Posts in the sciences, technology, communication and engineering would no doubt vary between companies using bleeding edge technology and those using more traditional methods, while better students would inevitably be pursued by the companies at the forefront of these advances.

In conclusion, although improving students’ first touch of science in schools would encourage many to become more interested in science, having a clear career path to well-paid full time scientific and engineering jobs would increase the enthusiasm of the students and their families for this policy.
