Easy Questions

You may think that some of the questions are easy, but believe me, all these questions are based on pronunciation problems from different countries that I have worked with over the years. There are the following sections.

Past Simple ‘ED’ Endings

This is one of the most common pronunciation problems in spoken English. Lots of people know that there can be three different final sounds when you add ‘ed’ at the end of a word to give the past simple tense. The three sounds are /id/, /t/, and /d/, but when do you add each sound? Also, the most important thing is sometimes you need to add a syllable. When do you do that? Try the questions and when you finish, the answers also have short explanations to help you. If you would like more information with models and examples, there is a really popular post with models and examples of the pronunciation of ‘ed’ endings here.

Homographs / Heteronyms

These are words that have the same spelling, but two or more different meanings. Which meaning has which pronunciation? When you complete the test, the short explanations of the answers will help you.

How many syllables?

In some countries such as Brazil, it is very common to cut the last syllable, especially if it ends in an /i/ sound. Pronounce the words and count how many syllables they have. Are you correct? Finish the test and find out.

Word Stress

Another very common problem is to stress the wrong syllable in a word. If you do this when you are speaking, your listener will be confused, and stop to think about what you said while you keep speaking. All the answers have short explanations to help you pronounce the word correctly.

Plural Endings

When you add the letter ‘s’ to the end of a word it has an /s/ sound, sometimes a /z/ sound. How do you know which sound is the correct one? Finish the quiz and each answer has a short explanation to help you. For more information including models and examples, this evergreen post explains everything about the pronunciation of the final ‘s’ in detail.
