Sample Answer

1 minute to compare and contrast the two pictures you have chosen as well as answer the two questions.

I’d like to choose the first picture and the third picture. I think that the people who are skydiving have, well, have chosen to experience that because they want to do something exciting, something different, something to really get the adrenaline going to take them out of their humdrum lives. And I think right now, to be honest, I think they’ll be feeling terrified. Whereas the people in the third picture are maybe also looking for something similar to do something different, something exciting, but they’ll be feeling more exhilarated by being buffeted around by the water in the river. I think these people in the inflatable boat will need to work as team. Whereas although whereas with the skydiving, there’s probably an instructor taking charge of the individuals who have no who have……….

Analysis

This is my opinion of the above answer. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.

This way of answering is the most common. talk about one picture, then talk about the other. If you have time, then talk about them both. There are pitfalls doing it this way, the biggest one being that it is really easy to run out of time.

The word ‘whereas’ is used too much. (again)

I thought some good vocabulary was used.

Not enough time at the end.


Lesser-Known Vocabulary

  • skydiving – jumping out of a small plane and falling before opening the parachute
  • adrenaline – a hormone in the body that increases heart rate when someone is excited
  • humdrum – lacking excitement or variety; dull; monotonous
  • terrified – really afraid
  • exhilarated – very happy, animated, or elated
  • buffeted – to be hit repeatedly and violently, usually by wind or waves
  • inflatable – something filled with air
  • instructor – teacher, coach
