Text

II grew up beside the sea and we were very lucky for the amount of activities that we could do very close to my house. There was the beach, there was also a little putting green, there was the beginning of a golf course. Golf in my country, in Scotland in particular, is really quite cheap. So it wasn’t like such an elite kind of game as in many other places. And so I like to play putting, I like to play football with my friends, and one of my friends had a boat and so I loved going out on the sea in the boat. But what I’d like to talk about today is walking along the beach because when I was a kid, you know, for years, I would get bored because that’s what kids do, they get bored if their friends aren’t there or if they don’t feel they have anything to do at home, they want something to do. And the magical thing about the beach is the tide comes in and goes out and so each day there’s new things washed up on the beach and so you know apart from the usual dead birds and plastic bottles and things like that there are some very interesting pieces of wood that could become games to play with. There were wooden boxes that I would imagine were something and so If I alone or I and my friends were very bored, we would go for a walk along the beach to see what had been washed up. And so there were an amazing amount of things. And you know, even from dead animals, for example, which were pretty horrible because they were so smelly, but they were quite interesting, really, to young kids.
