IELTS Task 2 Essay Sample Answer
It will be better to have wide use of driverless cars for individuals and society.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?
The extensive use of autonomous cars will benefit both the general public and society as a whole. Assuming these cars to be electric, I completely agree that there would be significant benefits, especially regarding lifestyle and pollution.
After an initial period, travelling in an autonomous vehicle would be relaxing as well as comfortable. If the majority of the cars on the road were also electric and driverless, these vehicles would be able to communicate with each other to create a smooth, effortless experience. Passengers could read, watch a movie or even sleep, for instance, while they were being driven to their destination. Moreover, once these cars were considered more trustworthy, more space could be created with the absence of a steering wheel so alternative seating arrangements could be experimented with.
Despite being electric and autonomous, no car can be pollution free. Emissions can, however, be kept to a minimum by creating a smooth and effortless experience with these vehicles communicating with each other as well as the traffic management system to minimise traffic problems. Bad driving causing accidents would also become a thing of the past, while street repairs could be reported and repaired earlier. All of this would, in turn, reduce the need for support service vehicles, such as police cars, ambulances and road work vehicles. Continual tweaks such as this would keep lowering emissions, thus reducing breathing problems and therefore reducing hospital admissions.
In conclusion, if the general public can accept relaxing while computers drive their vehicles, they would benefit in various ways, while society would benefit from cleaner air and safer roads.
