IELTS Task 2 Essay Sample Answer

Some people think that younger people are not suitable for important positions in government. Others think that it will be a good idea for younger people to take on these positions.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There is a contentious argument over whether major governmental roles should be open to younger people or not. From my point of view, government should have a mixture of ages and genders in top positions to accurately reflect the populace they represent.

Many argue that the young will never have the experience, leadership qualities or responsibility to be in office. Regarding the first two, although knowing how issues were dealt with in the past and knowing how to persuade people to work hard to fix them may be desirable, it is also desirable for the government to reflect the demographics of the electorate. For example, many young people may have issues with the way problems have been solved in the past and would much prefer a change. As for responsibility, younger people are often learning about it while buying a house or raising children, while older officials will usually have finished with that part of their life and therefore be able to concentrate on their official work.

If there were younger people in office, they should not be the only group represented, with a mixture of ages and genders across the departments. This would mean if they did have an issue that they had not encountered before, they could be mentored by an older official. Having these younger ones in office would better prepare the government for problems they could face in the future and would also encourage younger voters to be involved in politics and vote in larger numbers. This could lay the foundation for a more representative system of governance and a wealthy and stable future.

In conclusion, while I would like to see young adults in important governmental positions, they would need to be there as part of a mix of age groups and genders and be prepared to take guidance.
