Sample Answer

1 minute to compare and contrast the two pictures as well as answer the question.

In the first picture, it looks as if people are looking at works of art in an art gallery. And I would say that they’re looking at these things to try and appreciate what the artist is trying to say about his subject. In the second picture, however, there are a group of people on what could be the top of a building, maybe even the roof of a building overlooking what looks like looks as if it’s an old city, a green one, even though it’s a green one. And so I think they’re appreciating the view, taking the air and so on, trying to imagine how it could be in ancient times. And these people are outside, the people the people in the first picture are inside. The people in the first picture are gaining intellectually while the people in the second picture are probably gaining physically. And….

Analysis

This is my opinion of the above answer. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.

This way of answering is the most common. talk about one picture, then talk about the other. If you have time, then talk about them both. There are pitfalls doing it this way, the biggest one being that it is really easy to run out of time.

The questions were answered immediately and clearly, with the answer finishing with comparisons.

Good use of phrases, such as ‘I would say’, ‘it looks as if’ and ‘probably’ etc to show doubt.


Lesser-Known Vocabulary

  • works of art – paintings, sculptures, poems, music and so on
  • art gallery – a place to look at art, usually paintings or sculptures.
  • roof – the top covering of a building
  • overlooking – looking from above
  • appreciating – to understand fully
  • taking the air – getting fresh air
  • ancient times – early history
  • intellectually – cleverly, relating to the mind
  • physically – relating to the body
