Singer onstage - What might motivate these people to take part in these activities? - C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 Question
Student Graduating - What might motivate these people to take part in these activities? - C1 Advanced Speaking Part 2 Question

Sample Answer

1 minute to compare and contrast the two pictures you have chosen as well as answer the two questions.

I think in some ways the climber in the first photo and the singer in the second one have similar motivators for doing these activities, that is they need a rush of adrenaline to keep them going. Saying that, the performer may also want to be famous, which probably isn’t the case for the lone mountaineer. On stage, the vocalist will be in a completely manufactured environment with the sound coming from certain places and the audience grouped together, whereas the rock climber will be controlled by the natural environment around him and will need to rely on his skills to survive. After both of these people finish, they will probably feel elated and then quite quickly feel exhausted as the excitement fades and they can stop relying on their wits.
