There is two minutes to discuss how each part influences the central question.

A: Would you like to start?

B: Sure. I think one of the biggest changes happens with studying. When you’re young, it’s often something you have to do, but as you get older, it can become more of a personal choice, like learning new skills or taking courses for pleasure or career changes. Do you see it like that?

A: Yes, I do. And don’t you think with travelling, younger people often see it as an adventure or a chance to explore, but older people might prefer comfort, or even travel less due to responsibilities or health concerns.

B: Absolutely. Having a family is another one – people may not think about it seriously when they’re younger, but as they get older, they often start to prioritise stability and long-term relationships more. Do you agree?

A: Absolutely. The same goes for buying a house. When you’re younger, renting might seem more flexible, but as you age, owning a home tends to become a bigger goal for security or investment reasons. What are your thoughts on that?

B: Same. Borrowing money also changes. Young people might take more financial risks, while older people are often more cautious, especially if they’re thinking about retirement or don’t want to be in debt.

Sample Answer – Reaching a Decision

There is one minute for the candidates to reach a decision about which attitudes change most as people get older.

A: I’d probably say borrowing money, because our attitudes towards risk and debt evolve a lot over time.

B: Yes, that and maybe having a family – it becomes more central to people’s lives as they grow older.

A: Agreed. Shall we say borrowing money and starting a family are the two that change most?

B: Yes, that sounds about right..

Sample Answers

1. What other things do you consider to be important in life?
Apart from health and relationships, I think having a sense of purpose is really important. Whether it’s through work, hobbies, or helping others, feeling that your life has meaning can make a big difference. I also value peace of mind and the freedom to make choices. These things often matter more than material success.

2. Some people say that the best time in life is when you’re young. What’s your opinion?
It depends on the person, but I don’t fully agree. Being young can be exciting and full of possibilities, but it also comes with uncertainty and pressure. Many people say they feel happier and more confident later in life. I think every stage of life has its own rewards and challenges.

3. As people get to know each other better, do you think they become more, or less, tolerant of one another? Why?
Usually, they become more tolerant because they understand each other’s background and personality better. When you spend time with someone, you see things from their perspective and become more accepting. However, sometimes people also notice habits they dislike, which can cause tension. It really depends on the relationship and communication.

4. In your country, what is the general attitude towards elderly people?
In my country, people are usually respectful towards the elderly, especially within families. However, I think society as a whole could do more to include and support older people. Sometimes they feel ignored or left out, especially when it comes to technology or public services. There’s respect, but not always practical help.

5. As people grow older, do you think they spend more time thinking about the past, the present or the future? Why?
Many older people tend to reflect more on the past because they have so many memories and life experiences to look back on. That said, some stay very focused on the present, especially if they want to make the most of their time. It can also depend on their health and personal goals. I think it varies from person to person.
